An Unexpected Break

I was more than a little surprised to find myself on the ground. Flat on my back, with a gate and two Border Collies on top of me. One moment I’d been walking backwards, hauling the remains of an old wooden gate out of a gap on a forest path, thinking the area behind the tumbledown barrier would be lovely for a canter on my horse, the next, I stumbled in a hidden dip in the ground and fell.

Bending my wrist backwards hurt. A bit. But once I’d freed myself from the gate and the dogs I dusted myself down and carried on. I walked further, dragging fallen branches into place to make jumps, then went shopping and bought the supplies for the week, I moved my horse from one field to another, in the trailer. By the evening my wrist was sore. Pounding, throbbing, feel sick sore. There were still more chores to do - I did them. Finally I ground to a halt and admitted that perhaps I needed to go to the A&E.

An x-ray and many hours of waiting later, I was told I’d fractured my scaphoid bone. Strapped up and dosed up on painkillers I returned home. I’m now, a week later, pain free, unless I do certain things which make it sore, changing gear in the car was one of them as was clapping at a book launch. I’m also very relieved that at least I can still type!
